ioSafe claims that its Solo external hard drive is “a virtual fortress for your data.” How does one get to make such a claim? First you have to make an external hard drive, and then you have to make it fireproof and waterproof while also providing a Data Recovery Service. ioSafe has done all of this and put it in a sleek and sexy box.
While most of us can imagine the practical and domestic benefits from owning an ioSafe Solo, such as in a flooded basement or a burned-down home in which all of your precious and maybe sentimental photos, videos, music, and movies will be saved, try to conceive the advantages brought to business owners, protective services, or even Arctic researchers.
If you’re a small business owner, you likely have all of your documents (including your financials, contracts, partnerships, etc.) in one location (and if you’re smart, you’ve been backing all of it up somewhere), which could be lost in an instant if tragedy strikes. Now that I’ve put this fear into your head, won’t you sleep better at night knowing the ioSafe Solo hard drive is virtually indestructible? And if you’re an Arctic researching studying the melting ice, won’t it be great to know that the Solo is protecting your data should the ground below you fall off into the deep blue? Of course, getting the box off the ocean floor is its own challenge.
Seriously, though, if the ioSafe Solo fell to the ocean floor, it would be scrap because it’s only waterproof to 10 feet for 72 hours. As far as being fireproof, the Solo can withstand 1,550-degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.
Other features include active airflow cooling, the ability to bolt the Solo to the ground, and of course the Data Recovery Service, which extends to up to $1,000 forensic recovery.
Undressing the ioSafe Solo
Your biggest question at this point is likely about the Solo’s storage capacity, which is a nice, robust 2TB. The device is also compatible for both Mac and PC and connects easily via USB 2.0. Of course, all this nice protection doesn’t come in a compact package; the Solo measures 5” x 7.1” x 11” and weighs 15 pounds. Thankfully, the ioSafe Solo is affordable at just $149.
