Nokia 3720 Classic

Nokia's rugged and retro looking mobile phone.

Are you the type of dude who’s rough with his cell phone? Are you the one who leaves his phone near a campfire only to have someone knock it from its perch to land in a pile of ashes, where it stays during a summer shower? Are you the drunk guy at a house party who tries to make a call while relieving yourself in the toilet, only to have the cell phone slip out from between your shoulder and ear and land in the bowl?

If you answered yes, then you’re in need of the Nokia 3720 Classic, which is a tough and rugged cell phone for brutish types. This GSM cell phone (as basic looking as it is) was built to be dust, water, and shock-resistant (according to IP54 standards), which means that it’s perfect for guys working in the trades, outdoorsy types, and irresponsible phone owners. Yes, it’s a retro candybar style phone (there’s no touchscreen, flip-open capabilities, or slider mechanism), but it’s functional and basic, meaning that it’s a breeze to use. However, just because it’s a candybar doesn’t mean it’s an eyesore; the Nokia 3720 classic is nicely bezelled with an attractive chrome finish.

While the Nokia 3720 classic does have SMS and MMS, it’s definitely not meant to be a multimedia phone for several reasons: the camera is weak, there’s no 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity, there’s no GPS, it has a 2.5 mm headphone jack, and the processor is slow, making the web browser slow.

On the plus side, however, the Nokia 3720 has excellent battery life (7 hours of talk time and 450 hours of standby) and it runs Windows Live Messenger, among a few other semi-cool features.

Among the Nokia 3720’s more unique features is the LED flashlight, which is activated by pressing and holding the * key. The LED flashlight, when in camera mode, also acts as a super bright flash for the camera. The camera itself isn’t all that great at just 2 megapixels and the video capture really lags at 11 fps. While there’s no GPS, the Nokia 3720 classic comes with Nokia Maps, which is a plus I guess. There’s a 1GB microSD card onboard, which probably won’t do much but keep up with the potentially extensive and detailed contact list you could create; this is because, like I said, the Nokia 3720 isn’t a multi-media phone and what you can get out of it in terms of music is limited (bass response is weak at best and unless you have a 2.5-3.5 mm headphone adapter, you’re stuck with the one in the box).

The 2.2-inch display on the phone is what you’d expect from a candybar, which isn’t much but it is good enough for MMS.

A highlight on the Nokia 3720 is the tried-and-tested S40 user interface, which makes the phone simple and easy to use. Also, it comes preloaded with Windows Live Messenger as well as GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth v2.1, and USB connectivity for PC synchronization.
