Nokia X6

A look at Nokia's latest multimedia smartphone.

The Nokia X6 might just be the smartphone that you want to get your grubby little multimedia hands on. Why? Because it has just about everything you could want in an SMS/MMS/IM device, plus it has incredible music capabilities.

As you know, Nokia has a solid reputation for building quality products (I still remember my candy-bar phone and the abuse I put it through – and it survived). Nokia also has what might be the most unforgettable ringtone (whether that’s a good or bad thing, I’ll leave that up to you). Thankfully, Nokia has updated its looks since those candy-bar days while maintaining a tough product. One bit of proof is the scratch-proof 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, which has a pixel resolution of 360 x 640 and displays 16 million colors. There’s also an accelerometer, but that’s to be expected on a phone like this.

The Nokia X6 is running the familiar Symbian OS, which allows you to customize the phone as you wish. There are, however, two major services that you get with the X6 that make everything all right in the world: The Ovi Service (which gets you stuff like Ovi Maps supporting aGPS and other apps) and the Comes with Music service. If you don’t know, Comes with Music gives you unlimited and free access to millions of songs until the term of your subscription expires, however, you get to keep all the songs you downloaded and they’re transferable between your Nokia X6 and your PC. In addition to these services you also get a full web browser, Playlist DJ, some gaming, DJ Mix Tour, and Asphault4.

Proving that the Nokia X6 is a social phone is the ability to carry 20 of your closest friends and networking sites on your home screen. You’ll always be connected, so don’t blame Nokia when your friends dump you because you failed to reach out.

Undressing the Nokia X6

There’s still more to the Nokia X6, believe it or not. The onboard camera is decent at 5 megapixels, and it features Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, TV-out, video capture (at 30 fps), and online sharing. Also onboard is 32MB of storage (there’s a microSD slot as well), which you’ll need after downloading all those free MP3s from Comes with Music. You have the option of using the 3.5 mm headphone jack or using a Bluetooth headset, and the X6 comes with Wi-Fi. GSM and UMTS bands are offered.

Measuring in at 4.4” x 2.0” x 0.6” and weighing 4.3 ounces, you’ll hardly notice the Nokia X6 in your pocket, but be sure that people will notice it when it’s in your hands. Also, don’t be surprised if people say that it looks like an HTC product. There are eight to six hours of talk time (2G/3G) and 17 to 18 days of standby. If music is what you’re after, you’ll enjoy 35 hours of playback before needing a charge.

Nokia isn’t breaking the mold with the X6; it’s just offering a lot of what you want. It’s expected to ship to Europe in Q4, but whether or not it’s worth the estimated $652 USD is dependent on how much you’re willing to part with.
