Robert James Kuefler is a 60-year-old who has made the news for one reason only: he lived with two dead bodies for a year.
Minnesota police have charged Kuefler with interference with a dead body or scene of death after it was discovered he had been living with the dead bodies of his twin brother and his mom because, according to him, he was too traumatized to report them to police. And this only came to light after Kuefler’s neighbors asked police to check on him.
Responding officers said the house had the stench of decay. They found the skeletal remains of Kuefler’s mother Evelyn in an upstairs bedroom, and the mummified corpse of his twin brother Richard in the basement, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Autopsies on the bodies showed both died of natural causes; Richard in July 2015, and his mother a month later.
“I was traumatized. What would you do?” Kuefler told The Associated Press on Saturday. “I am not some nut ball. People think I am, but I’m not. I loved them.”
Dude, your brother became a mummy. Jesus. But there’s more. Kuefler told police that he found his brother dead in a chair, and “eventually moved the body to the bathroom as it was “in the way.” Kuefler also added that he knew his mother was dying, but “didn’t want to be around when she died, so he left the house to drive around a couple of hours.” And of course she was dead when he got back.
Police said that Kuefler will be given access to psychological help through the court system, something he truly needs, although Kuefler tells AP that he doesn’t think he needs it.
