The future is an amazing place to live. We've got more computing power in our phones than they had in NASA's early-era spaceships, and we're growing body parts in petri dishes. We're making leaps of scientific and artistic advancement that would've been considered staggeringly inconceivable two decades ago. Yet somehow, a massive percentage of the world still engages in archaic rituals and delusionally oppressive paranoia which allows beliefs to rise that the mere name of a visiting rock band can lead to personal ruin for an entire nation.
A text message aimed at alt-rockers Incubus is circulating in advance of the group’s scheduled July 28 concert at the Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines, as part of their world tour in support of their new album If Not Now, When? (read our review of the excellent record here).
The desperately urgent text states: “PRAYER ALERT !! A rock band called INCUBUS s comin 2perform at d Araneta Coliseum on July 28. We mUST pRAY this group dUZnt even step on2 Philippine soil so that they dONT impart their spirits in2 our youth!!” according to ABS-CBN News.
The message then describes the word “incubus,” stating the word is a “male demon believed to lie on sleeping persons…,” a “situation resembling a terrifying dream” or “someone who depresses or worries others.” The text also states “incubus” is another word for “nightmare.”
Let's set aside the fact that LOLspeak was used to convey a supposedly urgent spiritual message to the country, for the sake of focusing on the inevitable fact that the world will be led to ruin by religious hysteria - whether through theocratic lunatics with their finger on the nuclear trigger, or through further social decline into oppressive, warring factions. For every rational soul, there seem to be ten with wild eyes and angry delusions that always seem to involve judging others for their lack of adherence to one ancient doctrine or another - even in matters of what music a person chooses to listen to.
Throughout history we've seen endless wars fought in God's name, endless atrocities committed by those who claim spiritual authority, and an inconceivably vast ocean of spiritual spinsters far & wide who seek to control the actions of others in the name of the higher power they were subjected to & indoctrinated into worshipping as children. Hell, we've got at least one presidential candidate who believes God has chosen her for public office - after watching the United States endure eight years of "God visited & spoke to me" nonsense from the younger George Bush. Nonsense which included what Bush claimed was divine guidance in initiating a resources invasion against non-Christians in foreign lands, which ended the lives of over a million civilians. And counting.
This level of lunacy is no different than a campaign aimed at preventing hippie rock music from being played for a few thousand people because the band name is questionable. It justifies oppression and censorship, and gives priority voice to a group which wishes to force the rules of their mythology upon others. The power of delusion mixed with widespread access is terrifying.
In an interview posted in March 2009 on YouTube, frontman Brandon Boyd and guitarist Mike Einziger explained that they named their band what they did “because it’s a silly sounding word."
“We were 15 and we had to think of a name quickly because we got to play at a party in someone’s backyard,” Boyd explained, before mentioning that they thought the word was “pretty harmless.” They chose the name Incubus over Spiral Staircase and Chunk of Funk.
