At a surprise California show last Thursday (Aug. 11), Green Day played over a dozen new tracks to the few lucky revelers in attendance, including a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse via the new song "Amy".
Check out Green Day's debut of "Amy" from their show in Costa Mesa's Tiki Bar (The band have posted the full lyrics to the song on their official website):
"Amy don't you go/I want you around/Singin' woah, please don't go/Do you wanna be a friend of mine?" pleads frontman Billie Joe Armstrong on the song's chorus, which he performed solo. The track ends with Armstrong singing, "May I have this last dance/By chance if we should meet?/Can you write me a lullaby?/So we can sing you to sleep."
In addition to roughly 19 new songs that reportedly featured a surprising amount of solos and a renewed focus on driving rock n' roll, the band also included a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's "Goodbye To Romance," as well as a tease of their side project Foxboro Hot Tubs with "It's F*ck Time".
"Thanks everyone for coming out to the show Thursday night and supporting us and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation," the band posted on its website. "We have been in jamming and writing new songs for the last few months. It felt great to play these new Green Day songs live and share our 'work in progress'.. Stay tuned for more!"
