The Fratellis (meaning brothers in Italian) is a power pop trio from the UK. Making the knees weak in concertgoers in their own stomping grounds has opened the floodgates of fury into the music hordes everywhere. Imagine Punk Rock Dog, with his razor sharp teeth, gnawing on Mr. Brit Pop mailman. That’s the type of overwhelming feeling I get when I listen to the Fratellis debut rock album, Costello Music. Not only do I like the cover with the three lovely ladies on the front of it, but also I am sure they wouldn’t mind borrowing the doggie bag as a purse. That’s just hot! For a first release, it gave me a fair knock in the jaw. This is how my listening experience played out:
My stereo swallows my record and says “Thank you! Come again.” I say “What? No music? I have been played!” Yes, folks my stereo sucks. Then, suddenly, a chorus line of legs are kickin’ out, left-right-left, from ear to ear as the song “Henrietta” funnels out into my living room. The song is about a female fan that seems to melt every time she sees them. They have no choice but to like this tawdry trick because she always follows them around. Must be tough! Most bands should be so lucky. Flathead comes throwing the few punches that barely missed my jaw earlier. It’s one of my personal favorites and sends my body into a macabre, seizure-like dance. Oh man. My stereo says, “What kind of Tim Leary gel tabs did you feed me?” I say “the ones that send you Creepin’ Up The Backstairs.” Maybe that girl that they were strokin’ esteems with is featured in Creepin’ Up The Backstairs too? She snuck out of the house to party again. Damn girl! I really dig this song to the point that when I stop whistling the tune, the whistle lies dormant so it can ride on ones’ lips again. Always there, giving hints. “Say, Stereo. You wouldn’t happen to have a hoppin’ jitter with a noodling guitar and vocal paralleled in unison as a hook in a song, would you?” We missed that one… My lovely electronic pile decided to silence that track ages ago. So, yes in fact, Chelsea Dagger is a bangin’ anthem that has a vocal crick similar to the singer of T-Rex. Well done, my brothers!
Costello Music is a fantastic, fun record that should not be missed. Get it into a PERFECTLY OPPERANT stereo and keep it there!
