The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) just announced that submissions for the 2011 Juno Awards will open this Friday, October 1st, and in honour of the Juno Awards’ 40-year anniversary, they’re also adding a new category to its roster of accolades: Best Electronic Album of the Year.

The award will go to an album composed “with electronic equipment as the essential song-writing tools and defined by their electronic elements. Musical genres and respective subgenres such as (but not

limited to) techno, house, electro, trance, drum’n’bass, dubstep, grime, electro-acoustic, turntablism, sample-based music, ambient and downtempo are eligible for the category.” This becomes the 40th category of the Junos (to coincide with the milestone anniversary).

“Over the past 40 years, CARAS has evolved and expanded to constantly reflect Canada’s musical landscape. This new category is more evidence of our ongoing commitment to recognize the depth of Canadian music and the innovation that our artists continue to put forth,” said Melanie Berry, President & CEO of CARAS, in an official press release.

Founded in 1970, the annual Juno Awards have been recognizing Canadian musical talent for decades, and the yearly “Walk of Fame” additions are also celebrated during the Juno ceremonies. Depending on the type of award, the winners are chosen by CARAS or a panel of experts.

The Juno Awards will air on March 27th at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. For submission info, a list of previous winners, and more, visit their official site at www.junoawards.ca.
