JUNO Awards rock out St. John's

Drake takes Best New Artist over Justin Bieber.

St. John’s hasn’t seen a star-studded night quite like last Sunday at the Juno Awards. First off the city was shrouded in a thick cloud of fog, forcing many performers to land in Hailfax or the more-remote town of Gander (where they apparently didn’t even have signals for their BlackBerrys) and then trek by bus to the award ceremony. Secondly, the girls of St. John’s may have broken the sound barrier with their shrieks as Justin Bieber arrived and later performed.

However, it was crooner Michael Bublé who really stole the show, amassing four Junos to add to his collection, including album of the year for “Crazy Love,” single of the year for “Haven’t Met You Yet” and the award for fan choice award.

"I think there’s a lot of people that obviously make us all proud. It’s lovely to win these and I say this as honestly and as humbly as I can: It’s lovely to win these awards, but on a night like this, how can you compare any of these acts together? It’s apples and oranges. We all do totally different things," Michael Bublé said after winning his second Juno of the evening.

Bieber didn’t win any of the three awards he was nominated for, however Kings of Leon won international album of the year for “Only By The Night,” artist of the year went to K’naan (he also won songwriter of the year), group of the year was awarded to Metric, and Drake took home the Juno for new artist of the year.

This time around, the Junos didn’t have a host, and they also set up a satellite on George Street where hundreds of fans were gathered for a street fest. Bublé, Billy Talent, Metric and Drake were among the live performers.
