There's no question that iTunes has revolutionized the landscape of the music industry since its launch in 2003. It has helped legitimize and usher in the digital age of music, offering a platform for unsigned artists to market themselves directly and challenging established artists to make the evolutionary leap into the a new marketing model.
The online store has made staggering leaps in its six-plus years of existence, and is now approaching 10 billion songs downloaded. To celebrate the industry-changing benchmark, Apple will hold a "Countdown to 10 Billion Songs" contest, giving $10,000 worth of iTunes gift certificates to one lucky person.
Pop sensibilities are forever the rage among the legitimate music-buying public, which goes a long way towards explaining why the Black Eyed Peas occupy two of the top three positions in the list of the most-downloaded iTunes songs of all time. OF ALL TIME!

To recap, the only people buying music on iTunes these days are teenage girls, their moms, gay men and that spray-tan douche at the club who loses his fist-pumping mind whenever BEP hits the speakers. But judging by the numbers, there's a hell of a lot of them out there, and they're spending way more than you are on music.
