The White Stripes’ documentary film, Under Great White Northern Lights, is finally getting a proper release after two solid years of waiting for any new Stripes material.
It's already been two years since the White Stripes abruptly cancelled their tour in support of Icky Thump (due to Meg White's acute anxiety), and Jack White's been blazing a trail to rock immortality with two of his other bands, The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs, releasing albums and touring with both bands in the interim. But fans can rest easy, knowing that the impending DVD release of Under Great Northern Lights is a screaming return for the two-piece duo from Detroit.
Check out a clip from the DVD, featuring a performance of the band's early single, "Let's Shake Hands":
The documentary, which chronicles Jack and Meg's unconventional 2007 Canadian tour, is reportedly an intimate look at the notoriously guarded duo. "In a documentary, you just hope for things to go down, interesting things to go down and be in cool places. All that is really what happened and we had the luxury of time to put it together. And no expectations," said filmmaker Emmett Malloy, who also co-founded the record label Brushfire with surfer-singer Jack Johnson.
The film is being released in a deluxe box set with a live album in CD / double LP format containing 16 tracks, an exclusive 7″ vinyl, a hardcover book of photography, a silkscreened print and a DVD containing the entire performance of The White Stripes’ 10th anniversary concert in Nova Scotia, entitled Under Nova Scotian Lights. All of this is available for pre-order at their official site for $179, but there is a warning that once 2010 comes along, the price will rise to $229.
Those of you with the sense to scoff at such an absurd price can find some consolation in the fact that the documentary DVD and the live album CD/LP will be sold separately. Unfortunately, the live DVD containing their epic 10th anniversary gig is exclusive to the box set. Unless you're a torrent whore, in which case everybody wins. Sort of.
Pre-orders will start shipping on March 16, and the standalone editions of the items mentioned above will be up for sale at the same date.
