The First Family’s official Independence Day celebration included a concert, Salute the Troops, put on by the USO. The show was planned in honor of the hundreds of military service members who were in attendance at the event. The performance featured host Jimmy Fallon, opening act Michelle Branch, and rockers the Foo Fighters.
During their Fourth of July performance on the South Lawn of the White House, the Foo Fighters debuted a brand spankin' new song, entitled “Wheels”. Grohl introduced it as such: “The song is about that feeling when the wheels touch the ground and you’re like ‘Oh God, I’m glad that’s over with.’”
Grohl led the Foos through a short set on the White House's South Lawn, performing before President Obama and over 1,200 invited active military troops and their families at a USO-sponsored 4th of July party. The celebration was kicked-off by President Obama, who offered opening remarks, and emceed by "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon. Michelle Branch followed with a short acoustic set.
The Foo Fighters opened their hits-packed set with a charged performance of “Times Like These” before tearing off “Learn to Fly” and “Long Road to Ruin,” as well as the mid-tempo classic-rock callback "Wheels". The track is one of two new tracks the band recorded with producer Butch Vig for inclusion on a greatest hits collection planned for release this November.
