It appears that the day has finally arrived when we see the death of Autotune. Can I get an Amen!?!?
Jay-Z recently told a Chicago radio station that his new song “D.O.A.” or “Death of Auto-Tune” was inspired by a Wendy’s commercial that used the voice-altering software.
“They’re joking on it. It’s like, OK, enough of that,” he said, according to MTV News.
To back up the anti-Autotune movement, rapper/producer Wyclef Jean and Nick "Mariah's pet" Cannon have released “Mr. Autotune," a song that pokes righteous fun at the ridiculous musical fad. In the song, Wyclef sings, “I’m Mister Autotune/ If you sing off key/ For a small fee I can make you a celebrity…Then all you gotta do is pay me/ And I will turn this thing into a karaoke party/ you’ll be a superstar.”
Although Wyclef has been working on other albums recently, he hasn't released a studio album since Carnival Vol. II: Memoirs of an Immigrant which was released on December 4, 2007.
Interestingly, T-Pain - the king of Autotune- had a reaction one might not have expected: he was honored.
"That affected me in a great way man," Pain said in an interview about the song. "And I made sure I honored him, it's a great song. That's like the best song I've heard in a couple of years. It's great that somebody that important stepped up and vouched for me. That just makes me ready to come back out and do my thing."
Ron Browz, on the other hand, danced around a straight reaction to the song, telling Miss Info "I'm just doing my thing pretty much. I make fun records that everybody sing-a-long and that's what I'ma continue to do. I'm contributing to hip-hop...Hip-Hop at the end of the day is fun. So I just took autotune to have some fun with it. Snoop [Dogg] did it, he was having fun with it. Pain, [Lil Wayne] and 50 Cent played around with it for a minute, it's just fun...That's like sampling is out, oh no, you can't sample records any more? Sampling is a part of hip-hop...At the end of the day, a hot record is a hot record and a wack record is a wack record, if it's got autotune or not. The streets are gonna tell you." In other words, he's gonna be singing that robot shit until he can't milk it any longer.
Ultimately, it appears that the tide is turning away from the Autotune phase, and this is one music lover screaming with joy.
