Right off the bat it should be pointed out that we normally avoid anything related to the fake-ass rigged popularity contest that is "American Idol." We could give a dead rat's ass what drugs Paula's claiming not to be on or what judges aren't coming back next season.
It may be worth noting, however, that in an effort to earn itself some rock legitimacy, the show has convinced Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash to make an appearance as a mentor next week, during what's apparently been dubbed Rock Week, along with another expired '90s act hoping to drum up reunion interest (No Doubt) and AI's own prodigal son, Daughtry.
Fans can look forward to the legendary guitarist advising contestants on the show this coming Tuesday, beause his rise to stardom was exactly the model these guys need to follow: Jack Daniels, cheap whores, Jack Daniels, hairspray and lots and lots of drugs. And Jack Daniels. He'll be joining the ranks of an elite group of mentors that include Barry Manilow, Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton and Jon Bon Jovi. Maybe they should put together a supergroup.
Slash wrote the following on his MySpace page:
"Hey all, as you may or may not know, the producers for 'American Idol' have asked me to be the mentor for "Rock Week" next week. I was reluctant at 1st, but they offered me the freedom to do it however I wanted. More importantly, there are a few singers this year who are really impressive. Its the 1st time any AI line-up has really caught my attention. The approach I'm taking is different than usual on the show, & I'm going to make this as Rock & Roll an American Idol as possible, wish me luck!"
I think Maura from Idolator had it right when she suggested that they turn the show into a Velvet Revolver tryout. While Slash's day-job band twists in the winds of people's dwindling attention spans, he's giving advice to industry darlings on how to best whore themselves in a dying industry.

Chris Daughtry is set to debut new material on the show as well, if you're into that kind of jive. He and his band will perform its new single, "No Surprise," during the show's Rock Week.
Since my TiVo's been recording the show against my will for the past six months anyway (really, I swear!), I might just tune in on Tuesday to watch this action go dow
