New Music Releases for the week of Nov. 11

Music you might have missed otherwise.
It doesn't look like this wacky internet fad's gonna die out anytime soon, and it's easy to lose your way in the blizzard of new music out there - if you so much as blink these days, you're bound to miss out on some incredible tunes. So we've embraced the storm and compiled a list of new album releases for the week, with a particular focus on a few to keep an eye out for - or avoid like the plague.
The Flaming Lips - Christmas on Mars

Christmas On Mars is described as "a fantastical and disturbing film freakout. Seven years in the making, Christmas On Mars was directed and written by The Flaming Lips visionary frontman Wayne Coyne and features the band members and many of their associates as actors in a story set during the colonization of Mars."

The film is 86 minutes long, with an original score presented as both a stand alone DVD and as a CD/DVD package that includes a CD of the score. Psychedelia rules the land in Christmas On Mars, and as Flaming Lips fans we're happy to see this long-rumored project come to fruition.

Clutch - Full Fathom Five: Audio Field Recordings 2007-2008

Clutch brings the pure rock fury with their first live DVD/CD combo. It's their first release under the band’s own label Weathermaker Music. Clutch released Full Fathom Five: Audio Field Recordings 2007-2008 in September, a CD including many of the live tracks that appear on the DVD. Bluesy power-rock riffs topped by iron-throated word wizard Neil Fallon's inimitable voice make for one of the best hard rock acts in existence today. This may not be the best place to start for a Clutch noob (try Robot Hive/Exodus for a proper intro), but it's certainly a snapshot of their formidable strengths onstage.

Bee Gees - Best of Bee Gees

The brilliant harmonies and epic folky songwriting behind the Bee Gees Brothers played a large part in the tapestry of 60's pop music. Best Of, Volume 1 features 12 great tracks for those looking for a good dose of early Bee Gees hits, from long before the Brothers Gibb reinvented themselves as the disco kings of Saturday Night Fever. The hitmakers are in beautifully pre-disco folky form on "Holiday" and "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," as well as the downbeat "To Love Somebody." Buy it for your mom.

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Sunday at Devil Dirt

This reissue of the second collaboration album between Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan comes pimped with a bonus disc featuring seven additional live tracks: 'Revolver', 'Carry Home', 'Willow's Song', 'Sand', '(Do You Wanna) Come Walk With Me?', 'The Circus Is Leaving Town' and 'Ramblin' Man'. Campbell's a former player in Belle & Sebastian while Lanegan is rock's gravel-voiced Lone Wolf, former Screaming Trees frontman and part-time QOTSA vocalist. Devil Dirt was recorded between studios in the Catskills and Isobel's native Glasgow. It's a terrific album, packed full of dark-toned folky blues that's easily as good as its predecessor, if not better.

Jedi Mind Tricks - A History of Violence

Jedi Mind Tricks have spent the last 12 years tearing up the world of underground hip-hop, defining a new element of hardcore in hip-hop. The Jedi return to the jagged edge of Violent By Design with their sixth release, and as celebrate the return of core member Jus Allah. If you're down with super violent lyrics and aggressive tones over slammin beats, Jedi Mind Tricks are the group for you.

Vanilla Ice - Ice Is Back: Hip Hop Classics

Alright stop! Collaborate and listen! That's right, Mr. Ice is back, because he knows what the world needs, and he's here to deliver. The result is an album of rap covers that includes Sir Mix A Lot's "Baby Got Back," Cypress Hill's "Insane in the Brain" and - oh yes - The Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb on Me." That's capped by a wonderful collection of four different versions of "Ice Ice Baby," because... well, because that shit is too cold.
Seriously though - somebody needs to be incarcerated for this.
