New Music Releases for the week of Oct. 28

Music you might have missed otherwise.
It doesn't look like this wacky internet fad's gonna die out anytime soon, and it's easy to lose your way in the blizzard of new music out there - if you so much as blink these days, you're bound to miss out on some incredible tunes. So we've embraced the storm and compiled a list of new album releases for the week, with a particular focus on a few to keep an eye out for - or avoid like the plague.
Eagles of Death Metal: Heart On

Heart On is the third studio album from the Eagles Of Death Metal, known to their friends, families and victims as Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme- the latter, of course, being the nucleus and founder of the seminal gloomy sex rock outfit Queens Of The Stone Age. The Eagles’ garage-glam scuzz metal hops up a few rungs on the danceability scale this time around, as they dig into fuzzier blues leanings and deeper shades of chunk-riffage than their previous releases.

Clever, jagged percussion leads the parade more often than not on the album, leading one to believe that Josh Homme is, quite possibly, just as happy behind the kit as he is on the mic. Whatever the case, his playground relationship with Jesse Hughes has spawned three albums of solid sport-fuck rock joy all about chicks, man. And the world is a better place for it.
Bloc Party: Intimacy

Bloc Party's latest studio effort is an in-your-face assault of blistering riffs, pounding, erratic percussion, samples and sass for miles. Arguably their best release yet. Much as I want to despise them, I can't bring myself to come down too hard on this one. It's a solid offering from a band caught in a tide of trend. If the guys manage to stick it out another half decade or so, it will be very interesting to see where their sound goes.

The Cure: Dream 4.13

Thirteen albums is a lot for any band. But for the Cute, which is now down to a quartet (Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Porl Thompson and Jason Cooper), the band continue to push themselves into new realms, covering everything from religion and politics to materialism and, of course, love. Is this going to knock your striped little OG emo socks off? Not likely. But it's a solid step into the now for a band so heavily associated with gloomy 80's art rock.
Hunter S. Thompson: The Gonzo Tapes:The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

No, this isn't music, but these recordings by Hunter S. Thompson between 1965 and 1975 are a time capsule of his thoughts and descriptions of events, both as they're happening and in reflection. His writing technique often included rerecording commentary while writing. Thompson's widow allowed filmmaker Alex Gibney, producer Eva Orner and Gonzo archivist Don Fleming to explore the boxes of tapes stored in the basement of his Owl Farm home in Woody Creek, Colorado. They'd been sitting, untouched, since Thompson's suicide in 2005.
From Amazon.com: Fleming transferred the audiocassettes and reel-to-reel tapes to digital files, and they made their way to the cutting room for the film Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Now for the first time these previously unreleased recordings are available in a 5-CD set. The Gonzo Tapes features original cover artwork by Gonzo artist Ralph Steadman, an amazing 44-page booklet full of never-before-seen images from Hunter S. Thompson's estate, along with memorable photos and an introduction by film director Alex Gibney, an essay by journalist and Thompson's fellow foreign correspondent Loren Jenkins, and notes by The Gonzo Tapes producer Don Fleming, former front man of the Velvet Monkeys and Gumball who has produced Sonic Youth, Alice Cooper, Hole, and more.

Sounds pretty awesome, I'd say.
Kaiser Chiefs: Off With Their Heads

Kaiser Chiefs latest offering is a more cohesive piece of work than their previous outings.Produced by Mark Ronson and Eliot James at RAK and Eastcote Studios in London this past Spring, Off With Their Heads is another example of the Chiefs' ability to walk the edge of epic rockers without jumping into the abyss of obvious. They've got the chops for the anthems, but they never fully commit, and every once in a while that's a good thing.
