By Johnny Firecloud | Summer's right around the corner, which means that all the outdoor music festivals will be vying for your cash in the coming months. So far, the best summer lineup we've seen is for this year's Lollapalooza festival, held at Grant Park in Chicago August 1-3. |
In a change of pace from virtually every other music festival scheduled this summer, Jack Johnson won't be headlining any Lolla days with his easy-breezy, put-you-to-sleep acoustic hippie pop. Instead, we can look forward to a dream-team headliner crew of Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine and Nine Inch Nails. Also on the bill are Kanye West, the Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, The Black Keys, G. Love & Special Sauce and Cat Power.
The full lineup was confirmed yesterday after being leaked late late week by Chicago Sun-times columnist Jim DeRogatis. Lollapalooza founder and Jane's Addiction/Satellite Party frontman Perry Farrell spoke to MTV News about the lineup leak, calling DeRogatis "a stinker, so it was kind of like having a skunk at the party. So what do we do? Well, I think we should make him the stinky mascot... That's what I'm going to do... Pepe LePew." the human peacock continued, "It doesn't bother me that much. Why? Because I'm really proud of the lineup. It's like saying, 'He just leaked some good news about you!' So what? He'll be the evil mascot, man. I'm telling you, we've got to just embrace him. Embrace the darkness."
In previous years, Lollapalooza performances by select bands have been sold on iTunes, but Farrell promised that the Lollapalooza-Apple connection will grow in 2008, with a special focus on the products of backstage jam-tents that have become a staple of the festival over the years. "This year, we have an amazing concept going. We're going to be creating unique content, so we're going to have collaborations — people collaborating on songs — and then put them on iTunes, and then they'll perform them at Lollapalooza for a once-in-a-lifetime experience," Farrell told MTV. "These will be recorded in a studio, but of course because we can share files online, we don't have to be in the same place at the same time — we have finishing studios all over the world for the artists to finish the piece off. We'll start to talk with Radiohead about putting them with someone they'd like to collaborate with, tell them how it's going to go down."
Advance, three-day, $190 passes are now available for a limited time (after which the price increases to $205) at www.lollapalooza.com.
