Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese is on a bit of a music kick. After lending his golden touch to biopics on both Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, he is now turning his attentions to reggae legend Bob Marley. The currently-untitled film has a tentative release date of February 6, 2010, which would have been Marley's 65th birthday. He died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36.

Bob Marley's life is prime material for the Goodfellas director, due to the inexhaustable well of material to pull from. In addition to the timeless music that's known worldwide, his peace efforts, large family, religious beliefs and his untimely death are all interesting tales.

Marley's family is cooperating with the production, with Marley's son Ziggy acting as co-producer of the new documentary. "I am thrilled that the Marley family will finally have the opportunity to document our father's legacy, and we are truly honored to have Mr Scorsese guide the journey," Ziggy said.

In 2005's No Direction Home, Scorsese documented Bob Dylan's musical beginnings, his rise to fame in the 1960s and his then-controversial transition from acoustic folk to an electric guitar-influenced sound. His new Rolling Stones concert film, Shine A Light, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany on Thursday.

For the movie, Scorsese filmed the Rolling Stones for two nights at New York City's Beacon Theater, between October 29 and November 1, 2006. Footage from the shows will be intercut with backstage footage, as well as footage from throughout their career.
