“Stop Drop and Roll” is more the Hives than anything remotely related to Green Day, but the vocals undeniably belong to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. “Mother Mary” and “She’s Not a Saint She’s a Celebrity” sound like you’d imagine Green Day sounding forty years ago, while the summer-love dreaminess of “Red Tide” is a stark departure from typical Green Day hyper punk-pop. Regardless, the song kicks ass.
If I had to guess, I’d call it a tasty holiday treat to fan the flames for Green Day fanatics frantic for a follow-up to American Idiot. It wouldn’t be the first time the band has released material under a different moniker. They did it before with “secret side project” The Network, releasing Money Money 2020 in 2003 on Armstrong’s Adeline Records. Interestingly, Foxboro Hot Tubs is so far unlisted on Adeline’s official website.
Time will tell if the songs are just band hijinks or if there are intentions to play them live. In the meantime, go get the free songs and check ‘em out for yourself: www.foxborohottubs.com. What? Too lazy for even that? Then you can at least check out the three songs posted on the band's MySpace page. No downloading necessary.
Whatever they’re calling themselves this month, the band plans to enter the studio in January to begin work on the next Green Day album.
