According to witnesses, a fight broke out between the two after Blanco had been repeatedly pestering Doherty at the party. He was asked to leave, but later returned, and two minutes after arriving was seen plunging to his death on CCTV. Moments later, Doherty was seen on video running past Blanco’s bloodied body without stopping to help. He left the scene before police had a chance to question him.

Police originally believed that Blanco had accidentally killed himself by trying to leap from the balcony to a nearby lamppost, a story the coroner, Dr. Andrew Reid, later rejected. One of Doherty’s handlers called police three weeks after the incident and confessed to pushing Blanco over the balcony, but later withdrew his confession, saying “I was off my head”. The investigation is being re-opened on the basis of conflicting evidence.
