It appears that Robert Sylvester Kelly, known to the world as watersports-loving R&B singer R.Kelly, is untouchable. At the very least, he’s got one hell of a guardian angel.
Kelly was arrested in 2002 on 21 counts of sex with a minor and child pornography for a sex-tape he starred in, alongside a girl that was allegedly 14 at the time.
You know the video. Dave Chappelle made it famous on The Chappelle Show with his “Piss On You” video spoof. And while you may not have seen the actual sex-tape, that could soon change. A judge recently ruled that the jurors in the case, as well as the public, should be allowed to view the tape.
Kelly’s lawyers argued that showing the scenes to the jury would give them an unfair bias against the singer, particularly because of the urination scenes. Isn’t that the purpose of evidence in the first place? It doesn’t matter that he’s a freak for pissing on girls. People get off on stranger things than urine. What matters is that she was fourteen.
The trial, which started five years ago and has undergone several stops and starts, was set to resume on Sept. 17th. It has once again been postponed, this time indefinitely, because the lead prosecutor had a baby.
Meanwhile, Kelly has released seven albums while waiting for the trial to proceed, enjoying the strongest sales of his career. To date he’s sold 35 million albums in the U.S. alone.
Go figure.
