Prodigy's new album, or is it a mixtape?

After listening a few times to his newest solo project I wasn’t sure what to make of Prodigy’s latest entry. It’s not that I didn’t like it, cause I thought was good, but I felt a little cheated about half way through the album. It went from being an earnest release to a warm up for his next album H.N.I.C. 2. I it seemed all of a sudden like a cop out, as if to say, “If you don’t dig this album, then I wasn’t really trying.” The featured song Mac 10 Handle used an old DMX beat (what’s up with that?), and then I’m told not to worry cause it’s just a mix tape, not a serious album. Okay, whatever you say man.

Not to be too hard on Prodigy (after all I don’t know the man), but the album just doesn’t have the same feel towards the end. With The Alchemist (longtime Mobb Deep producer) on board the album has some serious muscle. The Rotten Apple has a smooth beat as Prodigy represents New York, but that seems to be the problem for me, he never strays from the same topic, how hard he is and how hard New York is. I don’t doubt this, but do we have to talk about this for the entire album? Stuck On You is as close as he come to be off the beaten path, but that song, while good, is incredibly short, and not that topical.

All in all, I expected a little better from the critically acclaimed Prodigy. I know about the beef’s and I know how competitive rap can be, but there’s nothing else on the album but self defensive rap’s about the same old thing. I’m the last one to demand that an MC only speak about certain topics, but show me some kinda diversity. Not a half hearted offering that’s supposed to be okay because it’s only a mixtape.

Dante Maddox’s mixtape isn’t hot on any street
