J5 member MC Soup spoke to Australia’s Gold Coast Bulletin about the split, acknowledging that tension within the group had reached new heights: "After the tour, that’s basically it. I don’t want to sit here and fake around with it - we’re not seeing eye-to-eye right now.
“People see us as a harmonizing, loving group, but that’s far from the truth. I’d like to keep it going, but you can’t force grown men to do what they don’t want to do. Some people may say it’s a creative thing, but I’m not buying it.”
“Some might say business, some might say merchandising, whatever, there’s some really stupid shit, some really childish things happening.”
Egos undoubtedly played a significant role in the split. Before the recording of 2006's Feedback, DJ Cut Chemist left the band to pursue a solo career, releasing The Audience Is Listening the same year. Current J5 members were apparently influenced by his success. “When it comes down to it, some people here want their own shine, their own thing,” Soup said. “If that’s what you want, I say ‘more power to you’. I hope it works out for you. Just don’t come up with lame excuses.”
Deeper-seeded issues between group members appear to have reached a boiling point as well. “For certain members it’s been brewing for a while - I’ve heard in passing there are things that could have been brought up a long time ago about how people were feeling that weren’t said. I thought we’d be a bit better at handling it, but we’re not. We’re only human. Even though we do what we do, it doesn’t mean we’re the best communicators.”
Jurassic 5 formed in Los Angeles in 1993, originally as a six-piece group, releasing a total of four albums. They have been touring non-stop since July 2006 in support of their latest effort, Feedback.
