Can you dig it, Ultimate Isaac Hayes, is a collection of songs from the singer/songwriter/producer/musician’s vast catalog. Isaac stated as a studio musician for Stax Records then moved to penning songs and producing records for other artists. Isaac was finally persuaded in to recording a solo album by Stax Records president Al Bell. Hayes ground breaking album, Hot Buttered Soul, sold over 1 million copies and made appearances on Jazz, Pop, R&B and Easy Listening charts.

The Success of Hayes solo albums gave rise to his soundtrack work. Hayes won a Grammy’s and an Academy Award for his Shaft soundtrack. Hayes also starred in and scored Truck Turner as well as Tough Guys. With the Shaft soundtrack breaking doors down the 1970’s saw many other Soul/R&B artists creating soundtracks for films. Some of the notable soundtracks include James Brown’s Black Caesar soundtrack Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly soundtrack and Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man soundtrack.

For this collection there are songs from different areas of Hayes’ career. The soundtracks are represented by Theme from Shaft, Soulsville and Do your thing. From his work with Stax they have included Precious, Precious, The Look of Love and Walk on by. The Enterprise era also gets represented with (the often overlooked) Chocolate Chip, Joy and Help me love.

Isaac Hayes was recently inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hayes is also recognized as part of the royal family in Ghana, Africa. Currently Hayes hosts the #1 rated radio show in Memphis, TN.

This CD lives up to it’s title as the Ultimate Isaac Hayes compilation due to the scope of the material presented. As a Hayes fan I found a couple of songs that I have never been exposed to on here. This collection is a more complete view of Hayes career than previous compilations.
