President Obama Sings Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’

Obama gave a short but sweet tribute to the soul legend at the Apollo on Thursday night.

No matter what side of the political spectrum you may fall on, this is undeniably cool: President Obama channeled Reverend Al Green on Thursday night at a fundraiser at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem.

Shortly after taking the stage, Obama thanked his hosts and the performers who preceded him from behind the podium, including soul singer Al Green.

“To know that Rev. Al Green was here!” Obama said, before beginning to sing the opening line of one of Green’s signature hits, "Let's Stay Together".

As the attending 1400-1500 supporters erupted in exhilarated cheers, the President nervously thumbed his papers with a smirk. He only sang two lines, but it wasn't a half-bad job for the leader of the "free" world.

“Those guys didn’t think I would do it. I told you I was going to do it,” Obama said with a chuckle. “The Sandman did not come out," he continued. "Now don’t worry, Rev, I cannot sing like you, but I just wanted to show my appreciation,” he said.

The Apollo event was Obama’s fourth campaign event of the night in New York City, hosted by Tony Award-winning composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda with performances by soul singer Green and vocal artist India.Arie.
