The Vines Frontman Attacks Mother, Injures Cop, Goes To Jail

Singer Craig Nicholls, long suffering from Asperger's, faces significant trouble in Sydney after a violent outburst.

Remember The Vines? The Aussie rock band's chief characteristic was spazzy-brat frontman Craig Nicholls, whose meltdowns and freakouts left the band's career in a seemingly constant state of uncertainty and bridge-burning business decisions. Nicholls has found himself back in the news today, though not for musical reasons: he has reportedly been arrested for assaulting his parents, according to reports.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that 35-year-old Nicholls has been charged with five offenses, including domestic assault, following a conflict at his parent's house in Sydney over the weekend.

The frontman allegedly punched his mother twice in the head, later fleeing from police who responded to a domestic call. Once cops caught up with him, his violent resistance resulted in the use of pepper spray – as well as one injured police officer.

Nicholls is due in Sutherland Local Court on October 17, where in addition to being charged with domestic assault, he faces counts of stalking or intimidation, resisting arrest and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Inspector Robert Duncan said the following about the incident: "He tried to evade police and [a] violent struggle ensued. A police officer suffered grazes, cuts and bruises to both elbows and knees, and was treated at St George Hospital."

Nicholls has attributed his previous public outbursts to an agressive form of Asperger's Syndrome. The Vines released their last studio album a year ago, their fifth LP.
