Paul McCartney to Become Nirvana Frontman

McCartney will fill Kurt Cobain's shoes as Nirvana perform at charity concert.

Paul McCartney is set to fill the iconic scuffed shoes of Kurt Cobain tonight (December 12th) as the former Beatle will take to the stage with the surviving members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, for a special Hurricane Sandy charity concert.

According to The Sun, McCartney had been secretly working with Grohl and Novoselic in the studio, before Grohl asked him to join them onstage for tonight's gig. The gig will be the first time in 20 years that the surviving members of Nirvana have performed onstage together, but McCartney admitted that, during their initial studio sessions, he had no idea that he was playing with the seminal grunge band.

"I didn't really know who they were", he said. "They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time?'

"And somebody whispered to me 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it."

It isn't yet known what music they will be playing together, but McCartney has said that he suggested the band "just make something up", so their set may not include classic Nirvana material.

The concert, which is taking place in New York, is also set to include performances from The Rolling Stones, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters and Coldplay's Chris Martin.
