It’s been twenty-five years since hip-hop’s first motion picture ‘WILD STYLE’ was brought to the big screen. To celebrate its anniversary a special edition DVD was released which includes interviews with the cast and footage from its 20th anniversary concert held at the original amphitheatre used in the movie. The new DVD is complete with scenes from the 25th Anniversary Wild Style Reunion Show.
What made ‘WILD STYLE’ stand out was its realism, shot in the South Bronx community most of the actors and actresses used were from the neighborhood, like lead characters Fab 5 Freddy who played ‘Phade’ a rap promoter and Lee Quinones the gifted graffiti artist who portrayed ‘Zoro’ in the film. When Phade is brought the idea of putting together a rappers’ convention he decides it is a chance for his friend Zoro to show off his artistic skills and assigns him to paint the amphitheatre the convention is to be held at.
Although the movie itself was not a great film as far as the writing and acting, it pulls through since the flaws are what make ‘WILD STYLE’ even more realistic. Ahearn’s point was to show the culture in different forms and he succeeded at doing so. From shooting an ‘on court’ basketball battle session between the Cold Crush Bros. and the Fantastic Freaks, or a young Double Trouble chillin’ on some steps bustin’ rhymes back and forth and Lady Pink givin’ up feminine flows. WILD STYLE is full of old school Hip-Hop moments. Even today the skilled and creative people used in WILD STYLE inspire those that want to explore the arts.
