Take a step outside and let in a deep breath. Everything seems to come with the utmost ease. With no clouds in your head, it makes the sky above jealous. The ground beneath now feels as if it will never give way. Everything is in the right place and what felt so real up until this point, is merely a shadow cast yesterday. Everyone is looking for some absolution in this life… This Holiday Life.
The San Diego, California quartet, This Holiday Life, brings back some characteristics of the old college rock scene of the mid-90’s and gives it a modern-day edgy flair on their album, Friction. Passion-filled lyrical lessons lay over swooning melodic infusions throughout this collection of feel good, upbeat songs. Pop in the record and the first track that welcomes the ear is “Don’t Stand Up.” This song is a sarcastic analysis that underlines the dangers of possibly taking chances in life. Following, is this straight ahead strut in the song “Digital.” A moody clean guitar lick waves you into the song and then the chorus punches in. This has to be the most infectious song on this record due to the inability to dispel the song from your mind. Stop singing to yourself!!! That’s right… “Motions,” a sweeping mellow creation about soul-searching, echoes with the lyric “These are the oceans, so why do you defend all of the motions that you create to bend.” At this point in the record, you can’t deny that the words and lyrics are honestly tailored and creates room for contemplation. It reminds me of when music was filled with lessons and purpose. This is what makes this record so appealing! There are many songs on this record that are worthy of single status and make it easy for the listener to let it under their skin.
This Holiday Life spend a lot of time on west coast stages and are taking off on a national tour with Waking Ashland. On past tours, they have shared the stage with bands like Switchfoot and Copeland. They have been nominated for a San Diego Music Award for “Best Rock Group Of The Year.” They will be playing in a town near you at some point, so keep your ears perked! You can obtain their record, Friction, on iTunes, at the record store, on their website or at a show. Take a holiday now with This Holiday Life!
