In the depths of the great iron sea, mysteries live without the fear of being solved. We can sail there and set our anchor. Feel the breeze? The sea salt dusts our eyelashes and when we close our eyes, something magical overtakes us. The crash of the waves overwhelms and stirs within our hearts. A passion for the unimaginable has a habit of making us feel as though we will stay young forever. Pendulum legs loosely take the time to quench the tips of your toes. Your pupils wide open, gladly take in the blue world that lies below you and you find that you no longer are contained within a body. You are part of the sea…

Keane has embarked on new musical horizons with their second full-length album, Under The Iron Sea. There is a commanding dynamic in their music and it is even more apparent when listening to the rise and fall, song after song, much like the turn of the ocean tides. “Atlantic,” the first track on the English trio’s debut release, is a slow-building epic. Intense chorale swells envelop the airy McCartney-esque voice as words pour from the lips of Tom Chaplin. An electro-clatter of processed percussion churns just underneath. This song speaks about finding a place that you can call your home and focusing on the simple, finer details in life. The listener then arrives at the 2006 Grammy nominated “Is It Any Wonder?” Their hit single causes a school of question marks to swim ‘round in the head. Filled with good vibes and a fresh rock n’ roll stroll, this song is a great representation of the amazing recording quality on the album from beginning to end. “A Bad Dream,” “Leaving So Soon?,” and “Nothing In My Way” are all incredibly arranged songs that flow easily and make you grow softhearted. The whole listening experience is laced with optimism as it sails through desperation, love, the reflection on oneself, and the ocean we live in; life.

During the recording of the album, the band neared break-up status, but seemed to have directed all frustration on making one of the most well assembled major releases in years.   I had lost faith in rock music for a bit of time, but the piano-driven trio has helped me to retire those thoughts. There is a reason why their songs are consistently at the top of the charts in the UK. Keane will take to the stage this summer in support of their debut record.  If you like performers such as Rufus Wainwright, Snow Patrol and Morrissey, then set your anchor at your local spot where you can purchase great music and grab a copy of Under The Iron Sea by Keane.
