Deathmatch: NFL Meets Call of Duty

The air was thick with a sense of tension and rivalry at Treyarch Studios in Santa Monica, CA, as the battle-worn soldiers filed into the underground bunker to prepare for war.  The walls of the dark bunker stood like stoic remnants of lost soldiers that once planned for victory on the war-torn streets outside.  As the brave men and women took their seats an eerie calm fell upon the room.  It was as if fear was a psychological influence that had never been explained to them.  The two commanding officers strode into the room, ready to lead their troops into a hell for which no human being could ever prepare.

Officer Maurice Jones-Drew menecingly cracked his neck in preparation while Officer Arian Foster walked through his troops to speak words of encouragement and the advice that only an experienced war-hero can provide.

"I feel like I’m the best.  If I wasn’t the best I think my wife would kill me."

                        – Officer Maurice Jones-Drew

"The people here have already given him(MJD) the maps ahead of time, so they’ve been setting me up from the jump."

           – Officer Arian Foster

Finally the series of deathmatches ensued on the brand new maps for Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike.  The best of five series went back and forth but, in the end, Houston Texan RB Arian Foster came away with the victory.  This was despite all MJD’s practice and "early map" advantages.  Sounds like MJD is going to have to avoid the wife when he arrives home.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops First Stike Grudge Match was entertaining, but I did have the opportunity to quickly talk to the guys about football.

CraveOnline:  Maurice. You just finished your 5th season with Jacksonville.  Your team has been getting stronger and your home fan base grew a lot this year.  What do you expect going into next season?

Maurice Jones-Drew: Well, hopefully there is a next season.  I think with these CBA negotiations it’s pretty tough as a player to kind of look forward to that, obviously we’ve got to keep ourselves in shape.  But, you know, not knowing what’s going to happen in your future, it’s going to be tough for us.  Not only for us but for the fans as well.  A lot of people look forward to coming out, especially in Jacksonville because there’s nothing to do BUT come to the Jaguars games, or come to the practices.  So, it’s going to hit our community pretty tough.  But if there is football, then i’m going to be ready to go.  It’s going to be a fun time, you know, there’s a lot of great running backs in our division, and obviously in the league, and it’s just going to be a fun time.

CraveOnline: Arian. With the Texans this year, you guys started off the year so strong, and then as the season went on you just couldn’t keep winning.  What is it that you think you guys need to alter next year to keep strong through the whole season?

Arian Foster:  I think the strong start and the weak finish is kind of indicative of why we were where we were.  Because you know you look at our season, you have six games where its like the last drive determined the outcome of the game.  And it’s all about finishing and I think it’s just about developing that mentality finishing you know through OTA’s and traning camp and things like that, because we’re so close as a team.  You know we’re a young team, and I think once we develop that mindset, I think we’re going to take our games to the next level.

My time with the young running backs came to an end and it was off to war.

Be sure to check out the new Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike maps that were released on February 1st.  They are available on the XBOX Live Marketplace.  I had the opportunity to play all the new maps and they are awesome.  Great graphics and design, and a lot of great new areas to deploy or hide your team.  My personal favorite was the "Berlin Wall" map.

Be sure to stay tuned to Crave Online Sports.  Later this week we will have footage and stories from my trip to EA Sports Madden Bowl 2011 in Dallas, TX!
