E is for Entourage: Kevin Connolly speaks

Nobody likes the money guy ruining the party, but there wouldn’t be a party without him. Eric, or E, gets a lot of sh** from his pals on Entourage but he’s held them together for four seasons now. At a promotional party for HBO, actor Kevin Connolly stuck by his boys, chowing down poolside at the W hotel. With a full tummy, he went back into PR mode to help us generate more business for the series.

CraveOnline: Eric’s been the voice of reason over the years. How do you feel about him starting to be wrong this year?

Kevin Connolly: How do you know I’ve been wrong? It seems like it but guess what, things aren’t always what they seem. It seems like I’m wrong but I’m not. I’m right. I am right.

CraveOnline: I kind of thought so, with Billy Walsh and Harvey.

Kevin Connolly: Stick around. It’s going to be interesting.

CraveOnline: How about the idea that Vince and Eric put themselves on the line?

Kevin Connolly: I think at some point we had to cross into that territory where everything is not perfect for the guys at all times.

CraveOnline: Has your journey mirrored Eric’s or even Vince’s being an actor yourself?

Kevin Connolly: Just in the sense that we’re on a successful TV show and our careers are going well but it’s different. It’s still a TV show.

CraveOnline:  Do women really throw themselves at stars like they do to Vince?

Kevin Connolly: Not like the TV show, they don’t. Not like the TV show. It’s not quite that easy.

CraveOnline: What tips might you have for a regular guy trying to improve his game?

Kevin Connolly: You either got game or you don’t. There’s really not much improving it unless you practice.

CraveOnline: What do you do for fun in LA?

Kevin Connolly: I just moved into my house so that’s been kind of a fulltime sort of hobby. I’m into it. For the first time I actually care about things like that, like pictures and what’s where. It’s been fun. It’s a lot of work but that’s sort of my big hobby right now. We finished working, so trying to get the golf game going back.

CraveOnline: Where’s the house?

Kevin Connolly: In the Hollywood Hills.

CraveOnline: Nice spot. Is there a certain style you’re modeling after?

Kevin Connolly: Just very kind of modern, contemporary. Big couches, big TVs, just comfortable. Good sports watching house. It’s all about sports.

CraveOnline: What would it mean for the show to get Emmy nominations or awards?

Kevin Connolly: Look, it’d be great for the show to get nominated for an Emmy. It’s just being recognized on the highest level with some other great shows. It would be huge. It would be. It would be great. I would love it. Imagine if Entourage won best comedy. That would be sick.

CraveOnline: How did you end up on Entourage in the first place?

Kevin Connolly: I auditioned for it. I knew Mark for a while and he wanted me to come in to read. I came in and sort of was right for it. That’s generally how it works with acting. You’re either the guy or you’re not the guy and I was just so painfully right for it.

CraveOnline: So you have the manager/executive producer kind of personality?

Kevin Connolly: Absolutely. I’m a director also. For me, I love the behind the scenes work too. It’s a lot of work that goes into producing and directing and all those kinds of things. It doesn’t just happen. It’s a lotta work. It’s a lot more work than acting.

CraveOnline: Can we expect a big cliffhanger this year?

Kevin Connolly: Not a big cliffhanger but there’ll be some uneasy [feelings].

CraveOnline: Not like Ari getting fired though?

Kevin Connolly: Right, not like that.

CraveOnline: Why has Entourage clicked?

Kevin Connolly: I don't know. That’s a good question. The only thing I would guess is that people relate to the guys being friends. I think no matter what you do, you relate to friendship and like your boys that you grew up with. That’s the only thing I could guess because it really does transcend. It goes beyond people that know anything about Hollywood. That’s the thing. The people in L.A. love the show because it’s sort of their lives but people all over the place love it. The show is huge in Canada.

CraveOnline: Do you think it has to do with the guys having ethics in Hollywood?

Kevin Connolly: Absolutely. It’s true. They really are trying to do the right thing. They really are trying to do the right thing. That’s a good point. Doug Ellin always said in terms of people say that the show is misogynistic. They said you’ll never ever hear Vince or Eric say a bad word about a girl. Turtle and drama maybe, but that’s their characters. You’ll never hear Vince and Eric say a bad word.

CraveOnline: Do the scripts still surprise you with outrageousness?

Kevin Connolly: Yeah, some things, like the Drama rim job was hysterical. That killed me.

CraveOnline: What do people in the business say to you about the show?

Kevin Connolly: They love it. My agent said that every Monday after an episode of Entourage, at the staff meeting at the agency, that’s all they do is talk about the episode the night before.

CraveOnline: Is Harvey Weinstein really like Harvey?

Kevin Connolly: I don't know. Look, a lot of the characters are loosely based on. Is it him? It’s a compilation of people I think.

CraveOnline: Do you and Jeremy Piven have that kind of verbal sparring in real life?

Kevin Connolly: No, Jeremy and I very much have a mutual respect for each other. We get along very well.

CraveOnline: Does Ari have an endless supply of short jokes?

Kevin Connolly: He does. And a lot of them are Doug Ellin’s unfortunately. That’ll never stop. It gets worse.

CraveOnline: Where are you hoping this goes?

Kevin Connolly: I’m hoping to take it as long as I possibly can. I would do 50 years of this show. You gotta understand. We come to work every day in California, right down the block from where we all live, it’s sunny, we’re in a different location every day, great crew, pretty girls. As an actor, it’s the best job, and I don’t care what you’re doing, there is not a better job ever.

CraveOnline: Do you like acting better than directing?

Kevin Connolly: Well, this is a unique acting experience. Entourage is a very, very, very unique acting experience. I could go in to win 1000 Academy Awards and it would never be as much fun as the show.

CraveOnline: What makes Entourage that special experience?

Kevin Connolly: Like I said, every day it’s a different location. We shot an episode here one day. We’re sitting by the pool, it’s a beautiful day, there are 50 girls in bikinis sitting around. It’s just a great show. Just locations alone are great.

CraveOnline: Are you four guys true to your characters?

Kevin Connolly: Absolutely. Probably the person who’s the most different from his character is probably Jerry. Jerry doesn’t smoke weed, Jerry’s dated this lovely young lady, Jerry’s very domesticated. He’s probably the most different from his character. He’s like 180 degrees in the opposite direction.

CraveOnline: Any idea what’s in store for season five?

Kevin Connolly: No, not even close. We’re not even picked up officially for a season five yet. There is nothing. Season five does not exist yet at all. There’s not even like, “Hey, here’s what we’re thinking.” It’s completely up in the air.

CraveOnline: Who’s in your entourage?

Kevin Connolly: I got no entourage in real life. Solo. I go solo. No entourage.

CraveOnline: You must hang out with people.

Kevin Connolly: Yeah, of course, I have friends.

CraveOnline: Well, that’s what it is on the show?

Kevin Connolly: Yeah, but in the show they all work for the guy.
