BATMAN CASTING: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Juno Temple!

Big Batman casting news this weekend: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, long rumored to be up for a major role in Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, is officially playing Alberto Falcone, the son of crime lord Carmine Falcone (played in Batman Begins by Tom Wilkinson). Fans of the comics will remember that Alberto had an important role to play in the mini-series The Long Halloween and its sequel Dark Victory, which were early inspirations for Nolan’s acclaimed re-imagining of the Batman universe. We can probably assume that Alberto is displeased with his father’s descent into madness. Perhaps his own sanity is about to take a little holiday as well…?

More unexpected is the announcement that Juno Temple (Atonement, Kaboom) is up for an as-yet-unrevealed role as well. Variety reports that Temple would be playing ‘a street-smart Gotham girl.’ Naturally, this has led everyone on the damned internet to conclude that she’ll be playing a female Robin, of which – in the comics – there have been two:

Carrie Kelly, Batman’s sidekick from Frank Miller’s acclaimed mini-series The Dark Knight Returns (and also his significantly-less-than-acclaimed follow-up The Dark Knight Strikes Back)…

…and Stephanie Brown, who briefly substituted then-Robin Tim Drake after running around Gotham as the vigilante The Spoiler.

Temple bears more than a passing resemblance to Stephanie Brown, but frankly we find both of these speculations implausible, and not just because Nolan has expressed disdain for ever including the character of Robin in his Batman franchise. It’s far more likely that Temple is up for the Catwoman’s street-smart sidekick Holly Robinson.

When introduced in Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One storyline, Robinson was an under-age prostitute who stabbed Bruce Wayne in the leg during his early attempts to fight crime. The incident convinced Wayne that he needed to inspire greater fear in the people of Gotham, prompting his evolution into the Batman we know and love today.

In the years that followed, Robinson became a major player in the Catwoman comic book series, even taking on the mantle briefly after Kyle gave birth. Her character is also openly homosexual, and her depiction as such won the Catwoman mini-series a GLAAD award in 2004 for her positive portrayal.

Of course, for all we know Juno Temple is up for an entirely new role altogether. And heck, she may not even get the part.

Crave Online will be back with more Dark Knight Rises casting news, because apparently it will never stop casting.
