Mike Figgis Offers 'Seconds of Pleasure' with Christina Hendricks

Talented actress and physically attractive human being Christina Hendricks is using her hiatus from AMC’s hit series Mad Men to have Seconds of Pleasure with Brendan Fraser. Funny… That’s exactly how much pleasure we were able to eke out of Furry Vengeance. Deadline reports that the film from director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) and screenwriter Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men) tells the story of separate people on a plane, whose lives are interconnected through vignettes. Interesting. It sounds like Lost without all that pesky peril, plot or preposterousness.

Rounding out the cast are Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You) and Kristen Scott Thomas (The English Patient). Details are scarce but Hendricks apparently plays ‘a wife who catches her husband [Fraser] in a compromising position.’ Unless he’s playing a hostage negotiator who’s been lying to his wife about his job it sounds like Encino Man is in trouble… and probably an idiot for cheating on an woman considered one of the most beautiful people alive.

Figgis and LaBute could use a good film on their resumes: both have been underwhelming lately after initial artistic success. Figgis burst onto the scene with movies like the excellent Richard Gere thriller Internal Affairs and the Academy Award-winning Leaving Las Vegas, but despite some clever novelties like Time Code hasn’t directed a genuine hit – artistically or financially – in over ten years. LaBute is an acclaimed playwright whose early movies like In the Company of Men and Your Friends & Neighbors signified the arrival of a unique and thoroughly disturbed cinematic voice, but lately he’s fallen into forgettable mainstream fare like the Samuel L. Jackson scarer Lakeview Terrace and the sub-sub-sub-par remake of The Wicker Man. Given the shape of things it’s difficult to get too excited over a new film from the duo, but they’ve both released fine films before and the strong cast could signify a return to form.

Crave Online will be back with more Seconds of Pleasure, although we’d probably be really embarrassed if that’s all we got with Christina Hendricks…
