Uncanny X-Men Enters MMXI

Over the last month, Marvel has been delivering teaser images for both Fear Itself and the upcoming MMXI — The Year of The X-Men. And it looks like both events are coming to a head in Uncanny X-Men.

During the latest online press conference at Marvel.com, Uncanny X-Men writer Kieron Gillen confirmed the link between a recent image of Colossus about to don the helmet of Juggernaut and Juggernaut’s apparent elevation as one of "The Worthy" in Fear Itself.

"Juggernaut is the avatar of a guy, and now he’s essentially an avatar twice," said Gillen. "I wanted to build the idea of this unstoppable thing that’s scary… It’s like a disaster movie situation. It’s a tidal wave It’s an earthquake… we go to the incredibly macro scale stuff of the unstoppable Juggernaut bearing down on everyone. Villains tend to not be as scary as they should be, and I want to make him really, really scary. He’s a meaty fella."

Gillen also briefly addressed the prospect of Colossus becoming the next avatar of Cyttorak… and thus, the new Juggernaut.

"Colossus is almost the guy who’s happy to sacrifice himself," added Gillen. "He’s the white knight personified."

Gillen’s first issue of Uncanny X-Men will be #534.1 drawn by Carlos Pacheco, with Terry Dodson returning for "Breaking Point," a four issue story that brings the X-Men back to Breakworld from Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men storyline. Afterwards, a stand alone Wolverine and Hope story will provide some slight breathing room before the Fear Itself tie-in storyline begins, with Greg Land slatted to return for that arc.
