This is an odd chocie on Nintendo’s part. Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version are set to release on March 6th. The two games mark the last massive releases for the standard DS line. From here on out, Nintendo will likely be supporting the 3DS with all of its major releases.
That’s not the odd choice, sorry.
This gets weird because Nintendo has elected to release two new hardware bundles for the Pokémon launch. A black DSi (up top) and a white DSi (below) will arrive packaged with the game and adorned with epic Pokémon etching. No doubt these things are cool (as cool as a Pokémon nerd like myself can handle), but it seems like a fiscal waste to release a new version of a handheld console with its successor literally less than a month from launch.
Diehards will likely be buying, but does Nintendo expect to make any serious scratch here? Probably not. Without knowing any better, we’d think Nintendo had a bunch of spare DSis sitting around a warehouse. They etched them, boxed them and will ship them to stores to make them more attractive.
That, or this is completely awesome fan service.
