Bizarre Creations Closes Down Shop Today

Today is the last day Bizarre Creations will be open for business. Activision has officially shut down the studio, with today being the last day of office hours for the developers of Project Gotham Racing and Geometry Wars.

As a tribute to the studio’s 17 years of game development, an employee within the company cut together a beautifully melancholy tribute video to the studio’s legacy. The video runs through the complete gambit of Bizarre created games, supplemented by the track “Clair de Lune,” which many of you probably remember from the end of Ocean’s 11.

Watch the video below, but be sure to have a tissue handy.

Farewell Bizarre…it’s been an absolute pleasure! from Eamon Urtone on Vimeo.

We knew bad things were on the horizon for Bizarre Creations back in November, when Activision was looking into the studio’s future.

“Over the past three years since our purchase of Bizarre Creations, the fundamentals of the racing genre have changed significantly. Although we made a substantial investment in creating a new IP, Blur, it did not find a commercial audience. Bizarre is a very talented team of developers, however, because of the broader economic factors impacting the market, we are exploring our options regarding the future of the studio, including a potential sale of the business.”

In the end, Activision decided the only economical solution was to close Bizarre down all together. And that brings us to today, with Bizarre saying farewell to an industry they’ve contributed to for over 17 years.

We hope everyone at Bizarre lands on their feet somewhere else within the industry.
