Beginning in June, Canada will once again see its greatest superheroes return to action.
Earlier today, Marvel Comics announced that Alpha Flight will be relaunched this June as an eight issue maxi-series by the writing team of Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente with art by Dale Eaglesham. The events in Alpha Flight will tie into Marvel’s Fear Itself crossover as well.
Alpha Flight was created by John Byrne in 1979 in Uncanny X-Men #120. Byrne later shepherded Alpha Flight into their first ongoing series which ran for 11 years. Three revivals have been published since then, including an Omega Flight miniseries in 2007.
Although several founders of the group were killed off in an issue of New Avengers, Guardian, Vindicator, Shaman and Marrina were resurrected during the recent Chaos Wars event and joined the surviving members Snowbird, Aurora, Northstar and Sasquatch; all of whom will be featured in the new series.
"You don’t have to have read anything to jump on board here," Pak said during Marvel’s Alpha Flight conference call. "Old time Alpha Flight fans will have a lot of fun seeing everything references, but you don’t even have to have read an ‘Alpha Flight’ book before."
The premise for the series finds the team branded as traitors due to Canada’s government taking a hard right turn into fascism.
"We’re going to play this on a huge scale, and it fits right in with the ‘Fear Itself’ story line," explained Pak. "I love these characters, and it’s a total blast to be punching into it."
"I’m pretty excited to build a Canadian superteam into a force in the mainstream…there’s a lot of depth to these characters and a lot of potential," added Eaglesham. "If there’s anything different in my approach at all, it’ll be an authenticity to the locales because this is where I live."
The new Alpha Flight will kick off in May with a "Point 1" issue by artist Ben Oliver, which will serve as a prelude for the maxi-series in June.
