DJ Caruso to Direct 'Preacher?'

It looks like Preacher may finally climb out of Development Hell: rumors have surfaced stating that if I Am Number Four performs well at the box office this weekend, director DJ Caruso (Disturbia) will be called upon to direct the film adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s acclaimed – and highly controversial – comic book series. Caruso would be the latest in a long line of filmmakers to sign on to the most sacrilegious story ever told, following Rachel Talalay (Tank Girl), Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and even Ghost Rider director Mark Steven Johnson, who came very close to getting the project off the ground as a television series at HBO. SlashFilm had the scoop.

Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a Texas preacher who accidentally kills his entire congregation when he’s possessed by the unholy spawn of an angel and a demon called ‘Genesis.’ Through Genesis, Custer learns that God has abandoned his creations and has been shirking his responsibilities somewhere on Earth. Custer teams up with assassin ex-girlfriend and an Irish vampire named Cassidy to find God and quite possibly kick his ass. Along the way they’ll have to contend with Custer’s inbred redneck family, a secret organization keeping Jesus Christ’s bloodline pure (guess how?) and even The Saint of Killers, tasked by Heaven to kill Custer before he can complete his quest. It’s just as controversial as it sounds, and any director will end up courting negative press and excommunication before Day One of production.

Of course, this is just a rumor, but if Caruso’s interested – and I Am Number Four is the hit everyone’s expecting it to be – he could have the clout to pull it off. Here’s hoping current screenwriter John August has a trilogy planned, since even three movies might not be enough to adequately adapt the comic book’s epic, sprawling narrative. CraveOnline will be back with more Preacher news as it’s confessed.
