Carrie-Anne Moss & Malcolm McDowell Join ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’

Wait... This is the second Silent Hill movie... Shouldn't it be Silent Hill: Revelation 2D instead...?

Production keeps chugging away on Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, the followup to Christophe Gans and Roger Avary's first adaptation of the hit videogame franchise from Konami. I'm not sure we asked production to chug away, but whatever: the first film was pretty good (despite missing the point of the games entirely) and there's no quantifiable reason why a sequel would necessarily have to suck. So let's be cautiously optimistic together, shall we?

Helping to make that optimism a little less cautious is the news that a couple of great actors have just joined the cast: Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange). They'll be playing Claudia and Leonard Wolf, two characters who featured prominently in the videogame Silent Hill 3. Leonard and his daughter Claudia are both members of The Order, a religious cult trying to bring about the apocalypse. Just once I'd like to see a religious cult trying to bring about something a little more practical or fun: like an age of low insurance premiums, or enormous orgasms.

The full press release is below. It seems like Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is following the games a little more closely this time out. Let's hope that's a good idea, since not all the games in the Silent Hill series are equally beloved…

Crave Online will return with more Silent Hill news as soon as we find the other three artifacts we need to unlock the door to our office building.

TORONTO – April 6, 2011:  The newest residents of Michael J. Bassett’s world of Silent Hill: Revelation 3D are Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix Trilogy, Memento, Unthinkable, Chocolat) who will play “Claudia Wolf” and Malcolm McDowell (Easy A, Entourage, A Clockwork Orange) as “Leonard Wolf.”   Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is currently lensing in Toronto and produced by Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody.

Moss and McDowell join rising star Adelaide Clemens (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Vampire, Camilla Dickinson, Wasted on the Young, Mad Max: Fury Road)Kit Harington (HBO’s upcoming series Game of Thrones); and returning Silent Hill residents Radha Mitchell (The Crazies, Surrogates); Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Lord of the Rings), and Deborah Kara Unger (Shake Hands with the Devil, 88 Minutes).

Hadida said: “Carrie has displayed her enormous talent across all genres – from The Matrix Trilogy to Memento – and we are delighted for her to join the world of Silent Hill.  She will certainly bring a new level of excitement to fans of the videogame franchise.”

McDowell will pay tribute to Stanley Kubrick at the 2011 Festival de Cannes this May, by screening seven of the famed director’s films in fully restored condition.

Director Michael J. Bassett said: “Malcolm is quite simply an icon of modern cinema and I've been a fan since I was a teenager when I managed to see A Clockwork Orange.  He has an amazing ability to bring new and unexpected dimensions to his characters and I know he will bring something unique and disturbing to Silent Hill.”

Hadida and Carmody most recently produced Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D starring Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, and Wentworth Miller.  Past collaborations include Resident Evil: Apocalypse and the earlier Silent Hill.

Lionsgate is handling international sales on Silent Hill: Revelation 3D which is based on the acclaimed survival horror videogame franchise by KONAMI and is the sequel to Hadida and Carmody’s earlier Silent Hill directed by Christophe Gans. For years, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father (Sean Bean) have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.
