The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one of those long-gestating Hollywood projects that nobody thinks will ever get made. But they do sometimes come together: The Watchmen, Chicago and The Fountain all defied the odds and eventually found their way to a theater near you. Now it may be time for Walter Mitty to do the same: Ben Stiller is reportedly in talks to star in the project, after such leading men as Jim Carrey, Owen Wilson, Mike Meyers, Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen all eyed the project before slinking away uncertainly. Deadline had the story.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is based on a story by James Thurber, about a man who constantly escapes his normal, banal life through increasingly exotic daydreams. Danny Kaye starred in a classic adaptation back in 1947. Steve Conrad (Pursuit of Happyness) has written a new draft that Stiller seems excited about, and Fox is looking to wrangle up a new director for a PG-rated action romp which they hope to begin filming this fall.

That's the dream, anyway.

Crave Online will be back with more Walter Mitty news as soon as we uncover its secrets…
