Casting continues in earnest on Len Wiseman's Total Recall remake: three weeks after Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston signed on to play the villain, Kate Beckinsale has been offered one of the two female leads. Deadline reports that the Underworld star is Wiseman's first choice to play Lori, a role originally played by Sharon Stone in Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi classic. Kate Beckinsale no doubt survived a lengthy audition process before garnering such a prominent role and…

…oh wait, she's Len Wiseman's wife.

Okay, well at least she's a good actress. The role requires her to play the protagonist's loving wife, who eventually turns on a dime and betrays him, revealing that she's been posing as his betrothed all along. Candidates for Total Recall's other female lead, the Martian resistance fighter Melina (originally played by Rachel Ticotin), have reportedly been wittled down to Ghost Rider's Eva Mendes and Sin City's Rosario Dawson.

We're endlessly fascinated by this remake, considering that it boasts a very different take on Philip K. Dick's source material We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, and also that the original film still holds up today as a smart, exciting sci-fi spectacular. Wiseman has his work cut out for him, and after his reasonably well-crafted but intellectually lacking previous directorial efforts (including Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard) we'll be watching him very closely to see if he's screwing this one up.

Crave Online will be back with more Total Recall news… like, totally.
