It’s almost serendipitous that while Joey, Mike and I talked about the glory days of the arcade in this week’s podcast, Next Gen News #62, specifically name dropping Soul Calibur as one of the shining beacons, Namco Bandai was busy announcing the next entry in the franchise at their company event in Dubai. That’s correct: Soul Calibur V has been revealed, and it’s coming out in 2012.

Namco showed off a brief teaser trailer for the game (posted below), which will take place 17 years after the events of Soul Calibur IV and focus on a character named Patroklos. Apparently, Patroklos’ family destiny “intertwines with the Soul Sword,” or some such nonsense.

Soul Calibur V will feature a newly-refined combat system and spiffier visuals (let’s hope so, it’s been roughly three years since the last installment). Namco’s press event was light on specific details regarding SCV, but they did mention the game will be present at E3 in early June.
