Amsterdam ranks up there as one of the most underrated cities in Europe, a city marked with a sexually charged reputation but with underlying cultural revelry underneath its x rated facade. Its a bustling city with a club atmosphere and quaint streets alike, offering a bit of everything for the versatile traveler. Here is a suggested three day itinerary for one of the world's most interesting cities.
11 am – 2 pm: Start out at Dam Square, the heart of everything Amsterdam with its Royal Palace and the Nationaal Monument paying homage to the Dutch soldiers who served during World War II. This former hippie enclave has converted into the centre point of the city, and for good reason. Its an excellent place to grab a coffee with city hall views and the New Church. Or, take a break from history and check out Madame Tussaud's wax museum for lighthearted kicks.
4 pm – 8 pm: Leidse Square is an eclectic mix of shops, cafes, and live venues and one of the most busy party spots in the city. In the day you'll encounter street performers and in the night, you'll keep busy at some of the city's hottest nightclubs.
9 am – 12 pm: Visit the Anne Frank museum, a home turned hiding place where you can tour the Secret Annex in its original setting. Relics abound, with Anne's letters and postcards forming a very vivid recollection of World War II history.
1 pm – 4 pm: Amsterdam has more than 30 museums, its primary being the Rijksmuseum, a national museum with works from 17th century artists including Rembrandt and Jan Steen. Take a ride on the world famous Museumboat and sail from museum to museum along the canals, with stops at the Rembrandt House and the Van Gogh museum.
9 am – 1 pm: Take a day of Amsterdam style relaxation at 100 acre Vondelpark, the Central Park of Amsterdam with its endless green spaces, walking paths, and open air theaters open from June through August. Plus, it is close to popular landmarks.
4 pm – 8 pm: Lounge at another night hotspot around the Rembrandtplein district with its collection of brown cafes, dark dive bars most resembling a tomb.
