Parks and Recreation, Modern Family and The Office have built their success on taking Christopher Guests’ formula of Quirky Characters and Mockumentary film making to make amazingly successful Television Shows.
The team (Katey, Noah, and Jessica) behind the web series, BOOK CLUB have taken that style and applied it to their series about Bibliophiles.
CraveOnline: Is book club your first ‘big project’/series?
Book Club: We moved to Los Angeles to be actors, and have found work in the field, but BOOK CLUB is the first project that we’ve created, written and produced ourselves. We’re currently writing another pilot but BOOK CLUB taught us that we have the ability to create work from the ground up.
CraveOnline: There’s obviously a Christopher Guest feel to book club, with the quirky cast and mockumentary feel. What are your other influences ?
Book Club: We’re inspired by shows like 30 Rock, Modern Family, The Office and Arrested Development. While these have been our inspirations, we’ve tried to create a unique and new world modeled after shows that have been successful. Our biggest goal was writing a character driven comedy infused with our love of literature.
CraveOnline: Ok, so this is book club – what are you top 5 favorite books of all time.
Book Club: For donating $25 we send you a list of our top ten favorite books but we will give you the first five for free.
- Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie
- The Awakening by Kate Chopin
- A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Aside from the complete list of books, sponsors to the project can also donate to get Bookmarks, T Shirts, your name written in to the series and even a walk on. And for the grand total of $5000 … you name your own prize. So I know I’ll be donating in exchange for a trip to Mars! How sweet would that be?
CraveOnline: For other fund raisers have you found much luck in finding donations from outside your own friends/family circles?
Book Club: One of the most surprising parts of this campaign is the number of people we DON’T know who have reached out and helped us. When we began, we thought our donations would come primarily from family and friends. However, we’ve received donations from numerous fans all over the world (Tasmania, the UK, Ireland.) We are so grateful and humbled by people who believe in this project.
CraveOnline: You’ve been putting the fund raising video on ‘novelruby’ on youtube, when bookclub airs online, will this be the same home?
Book Club: We will most likely create a BOOK CLUB Youtube channel as well as maintaining our current website www.bookclubtheseries.com. Also, we are in negotiations with various online distribution platforms.
CraveOnline: The campaign page says the inspiration for Book Club was a casting director that said actors shouldn’t read books and should just watch TV. I s there more to this story and the initial creation of book club?
Book Club: The casting director experience was the straw that broke the camels back. For a long time, we had been searching for a way to move our careers forward. We were stuck and felt like we needed to make a big change or leave. And since people always say, “write what you know” (and since we are BIG book nerds) we sat ourselves down and started writing.
CraveOnline: How did the cast and crew come together?
Book Club: We are really lucky to have the cast and crew that we do. Our director and producing partner (the fabulous Katey Wheelhouse) assembled the entire crew from various projects she’s worked on in the past. Each of them believes in this project as much as we do. We auditioned most of the roles and found an amazing cast that made each character their own.
CraveOnline: What are you reading right now?
Book Club: Noah is currently reading Story of a Marriage by Andrew Sean Greer, Katey is reading The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larson and Jessica is reading Looking For Alaska by John Green. Our next read is Dali Dreams of Gala by our friend and teacher Eddy Barrows. CHECK IT OUT! What are you reading?
CraveOnline: With both Jessica and Noah credited as “Creator/Writer/Producer/Actor” what is the actual creative process like between the two?
Book Club: It’s actually been fascinating. We became friends in college and it’s been interesting watching our friendship grow into a partnership. Because BOOK CLUB consumes us, we spend almost all of our time talking about how to make the best possible product. There have been times of frustration and times of incredible highs but what our creative process really comes down to is trust. Trusting that we can make mistakes in front of each other or throw out a story line that might be strange, or put ourselves out there to either look foolish or brilliant. We are lucky that we can trust each other so much.
CraveOnline: You’re goal is 25,000 by the end of June, you’ve already raised 6000 – if funding were to stop right there, would you be able to move on this project?
Book Club: While our ultimate goal is $25,000, we are moving forward and shooting more BOOK CLUB regardless if reach it or not. We believe in this project and believe we can make our goal.
