Marvel has announced today that it will begin publishing all-new adaptations of Edgar Rice Burroughs' famous John Carter novels, beginning with John Carter: A Princess of Mars #1 (of 5). In fact, they'll be working closely enough with the Burroughs estate that their John Carter stories will be considered part of his official canon.
“With our new partnership with Marvel Entertainment," said James Sullos, President of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., "we believe we have found the best creative force to revive the thrills and adventures in the 21st Century of the legendary John Carter of Mars. We are looking forward to introducing this original interplanetary adventurer to a new generation of fans and await the first issue with great anticipation.”
Roger Langridge will be scripting this first series, featuring art from Filipe Andrade and covers from Skottie Young. It will tell the story of Captain John Carter being brought to the dying planet of Mars and forced to fight all kinds of strange creatures. In the midst of an alien civil war, however, he meets the stunningly beautiful Princess of Helium named Dejah Thoris, who will change his life forever.
The first issue is due out in September.
