[UPDATED: Deadline now reports that although Stone was offered the role, she has officially turned it down. No news yet on who's next in line for the part. We'll keep you posted.]

Emma Stone is a star on the rise. After breakout roles in Zombieland and Easy A she snagged the coveted role of Gwen Stacy in Marc Webb's upcoming Amazing Spider-Man reboot. Now she's going back to her roots: she's been offered the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet in Craig Gillespie's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

The film, which as been in pre-production practically since Seth Grahame-Smith's novel came out, has seen a lot of acting and directing talent come and go. The Fighter director David O. Russell was once attached to direct, as was School of Rock writer Mike White before Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl, the upcoming Fright Night remake) came on board. Other candidates for the role of Elizabeth Bennet, a prideful girl who must overcome her prejudices – and zombies – to win the heart of the elusive Mr. Darcy, included Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska, The Dark Knight Rises' Anne Hathaway and recent Oscar-winner Natalie Portman, who is still attached as a producer.

Hollywood Reporter had the story. Emma Stone is an interesting fit for the role. She's best known for her comedic work, but is somewhat unproven as a dramatic presence. For Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to work she'll have to carefully balance the two, as the seriousness of Jane Austen's work clashing with the ridiculousness of a zombie infestation is, really, the whole gag. Previous actresses who have played Elizabeth Bennet (and variatons thereof) on film include Keira Knightley, Aishwarya Rai, Jennifer Ehle, Greer Garson and Renee Zellweger.

Crave Online will be back with more Pride and Prejudice and Zombies news as it has a fancy tea party… with zombies.
