Christopher Meloni Up for ‘Major’ Role in ‘Man of Steel’ [UPDATED]

No confirmation of who it might be, but we hope it rhymes with "Blex Bluthor."

[UPDATE: Meloni has officially joined the cast, but the actor told Vulture that he is not, in fact, playing Lex Luthor. He will instead play a general of some sorts. Perhaps Lois Lane's father? We'll keep you posted.]

Man of Steel casting isn't quite done yet, with at least a couple of major roles up for grabs. We haven't heard hide nor hair of Jimmy Olsen, Perry White or Lex Luthor yet. Now Christopher Meloni of Law & Order: SVU and Wet Hot American Summer fame is in negotiations for a major part and, frankly, we just can't see him as Superman's best pal. He'd make a somewhat young Daily Planet Editor-in-Chief, but one look at that hairline and one brief memory of his incredible turn in HBO's Oz make us think he'd be an excellent Lex Luthor.

Meloni is the second Law & Order star to become involved in Zack Snyder's new Superman reboot, with Julia Ormand in talks to play the Man of Steel's birth mother as of last week. Deadline made the report.

We don't have much to go on yet so our usual editorializing will now take a back seat to eyes-squeezed finger-crossing that Meloni's signing on to play Lex Luthor, since he would completely kick ass at it.

Crave Online will be back with more Man of Steel news as it's a bird and a plane and so forth…
