Uncharted 3 Beta

If you consider yourself a PlayStation loyalist, you’ve probably been feverishly anticipating this very moment. Thankfully, it has finally arrived; Naughty Dog has launched the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta, which is available today for all PlayStation Plus subscribers (which should be everyone with the free month subs handed out following the PSN hack), and buyers of specialty marked copies of InFamous 2.

In light of the beta’s launch, Naughty Dog has released a number of video primers to set the stage for what’s to be expected. There are four videos below, two for competitive multiplayer and two for co-op. The videos also give you a nice idea of the maps you’ll be playing on. But if you want to see more of the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta (you do), then you’ll have to download it for yourself and join in on the action.

There’s a lot to take in with this particular beta, which runs from June 28-July 13. Instead of just offering up a few maps and game modes, Naughty Dog is opening up a lot for their dedicated community to test out before the game launches in November. For starters, players will have access to nine different game modes.

These modes include Team Deathmatch, 3-Team Deathmatch (2v2v2), Team Objective, Free For All, Plunder, High Stakes and three co-op modes, which are Hunter, Adventure and one still to be named. The nine modes available will be playable on two multi-tiered levels — “Airfield” and “Chateau.”

Naughty Dog is taking Uncharted 3 to the next level with customization. The beta will give you a small taste of that. Players will be able to rank up and equip a plethora of Boosters and Medal Kickbacks to tailor their avatar to their individual play-styles. Some of these include “Retaliation,” “Back in the Saddle,” “Bargain” and “Daredevil” from the Booster side, while “Smoke Bomb,” “Speedy G,” “RPG!!!” and “Cluster Bomb” represent some of the available Medal Kickbacks.

Finally, there might only be a few player skins available in the beta — Nathan, Sully and a treasure hunter on the good guys’ side, a pirate for the bad guys — but you’ll be able to dress them up with tattoos, clan signs, glasses, shirts, mustaches and the likes to make your character unique amongst the thousands of players hitting up this beta event.

Like I said a few paragraphs ago, this Uncharted beta event is massive. No amount of face time with a few videos would do justice to everything Naughty Dog is showing off here. My suggestion: watch the above sneak peeks, then fire up your PS3 and start downloading this beta for yourself. And if you find yourself in that rare camp of not being a PS+ subscriber, or owner of InFamous 2, then the Uncharted 3 beta becomes available worldwide on July 4, 2011.

Have fun waiting until then.
