‘G.I. Joe 2’ Casting Gets Tough, Goes RZA

The de facto leader of the Wu Tang clan to play Snake-Eyes's Blind Master.

We're not sure how excited to get about G.I. Joe 2. On one hand it appears to be distancing itself from Stephen Sommers' hokey, overblown and underwritten G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, hiring a new director – Step Up 3D's Jon M. Chu – and with the exception of Channing Tatum an entirely new cast (not that we thought Ray Park was the problem). On the other hand, what if the filmmaker's actually stay somewhat faithful to Sommers' woeful interpretation of the animated series, which grossed a solid if unspectacular $300 million + worldwide? Shudder

Well, casting has starting picking up now, and in addition to Fast Five's Dwayne Johnson and District 13: Ultimatum's Elodie Yung, rap superstar and occasional movie composer Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, aka The RZA, has signed on to play The Blind Master, the man who trained both Snake-Eyes and Elodie Yung's character, Jinx. The role won't be The RZA's first acting gig: he's appeared in such films as American Gangster and Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai. Hollywood Reporter reports that he'll also be joined by Dear John's D.J. Cotrona, who has been cast as Flint.

Either we haven't gotten around to the big casting yet – Cobra Commander, Scarlet, Snake-Eyes and so on – it remains unclear if they're just being recast or if G.I. Joe 2 will just focus on different characters than the original film. Maybe these are the main characters. Then again, maybe not.

Crave Online will be back with more G.I. Joe 2 casting news as it gets tough, etc.
